We are committed to protecting all fish and fisheries from predation by seals in freshwater The RSPCA have been releasing rehabilitated seals into the River Nene, which have then moved upstream into Peterborough and beyond, sighted over 40 miles from the sea We wish no harm to seals but they are a marine mammal that belongs on the coast and at sea, inland freshwater fisheries cannot sustain them. The seals are also at risk in the long term due to the unsuitability of the environment and the finite food source available inland Recent Environment Agency survey data demonstrates a 90-100% loss of adult fish stocks in the seal affected areas, with huge impact to the wider ecology of the river and decades of recovery Seals are a wonderful animal, so let’s be a part of the process of keeping them safe.
Please fill out the form below with any sightings of seals and enter as much information as possible, the presence of a tag on the tail and, if possible, tag numbers are vital. Include as much information as possible in the description regarding what the seal is doing and where it is located. Please also include sightings from any freshwater fishery, clearly entering the location If your river isn’t featured
